Housing costs more and we risk a recession!

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

PRimage has read a new report which predicts that the UK economy will see its weakest period of growth in 15 years and risks a recession …. and we’re interested to see that latest official Government statistics show that Brits spend more than twice as much of their weekly budget on housing as they did 50 years ago but only half as much on food.

Depressing news if you’re in your 40′s!

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

The old adage is that ‘life begins at 40′, but latest healthcare research suggests that 44 is the age at which we are most vulnerable to depression. Judy Viitanen thinks there’s also the factor of the dreaded ‘mid-life crisis’ to consider – and also the fact that many mums in their 40′s are facing the ‘empty nest syndrome’, as their children leave home for Uni …. What’s your view on this?

Indignity of mixed-sex wards continues! – PRimage view

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

PRimage has previously commented and lobbied on the problems and issues associated with mixed-sex hospital wards: Judy Viitanen and the PRimage team believe that it’s a disgrace that although Labour promised to end mixed-sex accommodation in England by 2002, that pledge has still not been met! We now learn that health minister, Lord Darzi, says that the NHS would have to be rebuilt if the aspiration of single-sex wards were to be achieved! In our view it’s small comfort that Lord Darzi claims the government was committed to single-sex accommodation whereby wards are divided into male and female bays by fixed partitions. ….. What’s your view and experience? Please post a comment.

PRimage believe voters right to trust Cameron on the economy!

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Judy Viitanen and the PRimage team are strong Conservative supporters and big fans of David Cameron – so we were pleased to read in today’s Daily Telegraph that although millions of voters fear the economic slowdown will leave them worse off, they trust David Cameron to protect their household finances more than Gordon Brown. Quite right!

Sexual health and teenage pregnancies

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Statistics show that the UK has the highest rate of teenage pregnancies in Western Europe, and second in the world, behind the US!  So PRimage and Judy Viitanen agree with a Labour MP who is calling for free condoms to be given to young people as part of a campaign to cut teenage pregnancies. Chris Bryant wants them made available first in the 150 areas of the UK with the highest levels of teen pregnancy. Recent figures show there were 43.4 live births per 1,000 girls in his Rhondda constituency, above the Welsh average of 33.7. In England it is 28.9.

The MP has just launched a website, teenagemums.org.uk, and wants sexual health clinics at schools and colleges – he will be hosting a debate in Parliament’s Westminster Hall on Wednesday.

PRimage has also heard that parents could be sent sex advice packs when their children reach the age of nine, under a new drive to cut teenage pregnancies being considered by the Government.  Let us know your views on this.

Obesity strategy – PRimage hope the £372 million investment succeeds

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

As a specialist healthcare PR and lobbying agency, PRimage applaud the Government’s plans for a cross-society obesity strategy and campaign to tackle the UK’s growing obesity problem, which will aim to improve the healthy growth and development of children; promote healthier food choices; build physical activity into everyday lives; create incentives for better health; and create personalise advice and support.

Judy Viitanen and PRimage have often commented on this vital pubic health issue on our company blog, and lobbied for this ‘obesity time-bomb’ to be addressed, because we believe that the increasing level of obesity in this country poses a huge threat to public health, as well as major costs to the NHS.

So it’s welcome news that various government departments will work together in a concerted effort to tackle obesity and encourage healthier lifestyles from birth into adulthood. We were alarmed by a major report last year which warned that if current lifestyles continue about a quarter of children, 60 per cent of men and 50 per cent of women will be obese by 2050. At these levels obesity is projected to cost society £45.5 billion a year – which PRimage believes puts the Government’s £372 million investment in its new obesity strategy in perspective. In our view, it’s long-overdue – so we hope it succeeds. Do you agree? We want to hear your views.

Judy Viitanen also believes that it’s vital that the food and drink industry also work closely with the Government on the healthier food choices element of this initiative.

Healthcare policy ideas – CCA comment

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

PRimage client, The Company Chemists’ Association (CCA) has responded to the Department of Health’s call for policy ideas. Commenting, the CCA’s Commissioning Policy lead, Georgina Craig, noted: “We welcome the department’s focus on driving innovation; it can only be a good thing for community pharmacy.”

Vitamin E is great!

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Judy Viitanen and her husband are firm believers in the health gains in taking a daily Vitamin E supplement – we find that it’s a real boon for warding off the signs of ageing and is great for improving your skin. So we were interested to learn of a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association which shows that lack of Vitamin E – often a sign of poor nutrition – is linked to physical decline in older people. Researchers studied nutrition and physical function in 698 people aged 65 and older in Tuscany, Italy, conducting baseline examinations followed by three-year follow-up assessments, from 1998 to 2003.

“Subprime Brown” – PRimage agree!

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Judy Viitanen enjoyed yesterday’s PM Q’s session in the House of Commons …. and laughed out loud on hearing the Tories comments to Gordon Brown – likening the PM to a used car salesman who had delivered a “dodgy” and “damaging” deal on Northern Rock. PRimage agree – do you?

EU Treaty – PRimage wonder how MPs will vote

Monday, January 21st, 2008

PRimage is aware that MPs are to get their first opportunity to vote on the controversial EU Reform Treaty … and we’re sure that Brown and his Ministers are getting edgy on this; we think there’s a chance that they will face a backbench revolt … watch this space!
