PRimage comment on new weight-loss drug through pharmacies

As a specialist healthcare communications agency, PRimage is aware that obesity is a major public health challenge: estimates suggest that by 2050 some 60% of men in the UK could be obese, with the figure a little lower for women (50%).
So we were interested to learn today that GlaxoSmithKline has received European approval for their weight-loss drug orlistat 60mg to be available as a pharmacy-only medicine. Pharmacy staff will be trained to provide appropriate advice to customers wanting to buy the product. The drug will be available in the coming months, marketed as Alli. It will be licensed for treatment of adults with a BMI over 28 who are on a reduced calorie, low-fat diet.  According to the company, their clinical trials show that adding orlistat to a reduced calorie, lower fat diet, can help people lose 50% more weight than dieting alone.
