A fresh wave of post office closures has been announced by the Government, with the number of branches expected to be reduced by 2,500. The cutback was blamed on mounting losses and fewer people using the network of 14,263 offices. Trade and Industry Secretary Alistair Darling said there had to be a reduction in the size of the network to reflect the dip in business and losses of £4 million a week, up from £2 million a year ago. Business and pensioner groups have reacted angrily at plans for the fastest-ever closure programme of post offices which will see the number of branches reduced by 2,500 in just 18 months.
